tomorrow at 6 am my mother and i will depart for beverly hills, california.  i am going to the gracie gala tomorrow night and accepting my award at the gracie luncheon wednesday afternoon for a story i did for KBYU.

i am so excited.  i am all packed and bouncing around my house with joy...thinking about how i get to be in L.A., Huntington Beach, Pasadena, La Verne, and Beverly Hills this week.

most people who know me know i am somewhat obsessed with southern california.  for this reason:

so excited to see some of my very favorite people this week:

counting the minutes. ###

total eclipse of the sun.....

today a solar eclipse happened that apparently will not happen again for another bajillion years or something like that.

did you see it?  i did.  and i was amazed.

it turned out to be a neighborhood affair.  who knew so many of my neighbors have welding helmets just chilling in their garages?  i didn't.  but i am grateful they did so i could see this:
it was amazing!  it was soooo eerie outside.  like the day became the night all of a sudden.  the reflection of the sun through the leaves was beautiful:

this is a ghetto paper plate viewer my neighbor made:

and this is how a true american views a solar eclipse:

ALSO: fun fact.  apparently the best place in the entire USA to view this solar eclipse was in Kanarraville, Utah.  yes, that's the little town you pass on your way to vegas from utah.  well folks, that little town is where my family hails from.  and i think i am probably related to half of the population.  it is a seemingly forgotten little gem in southern utah, but today the little city had over 8,000 guests!  that is more people than have EVER been to Kanarraville.  my grandma, uncle, cousins, and other relatives went up for the event and said it was crazy.  i think that's hilarious.

all in all, the eclipse was a festive, educational, and unique experience.  and next time this eclipse happens, we'll all be dead.   so if you missed it....that sucks.  but you can still listen to these songs and sing them all day like i did:

double deuces

yesterday was my birfday!!!
it was a wonderful, magical, and tiring day.
i love being at home with my family.
in a familiar place, with familiar people, and celebrating with everyone who knows how awesome May 17th is.
My mom made me my favorite breakfast right when i woke up.
my parents accompanied on a morning walk with sierra who forgot my birthday and got me nothing.
dog fail.
i got to talk to my aunt kristen in NYC while we were on the walk!
then, my mom and i went to the las vegas premium outlets.
home of super cheap deals from:
banana republic
j. crew
ann taylor
and lots of other great stores.
i got some new running shoes and other cute bargains.
then we went to get lizzie at school.
when i got home, there was a beautiful vase of fresh flowers waiting on my front door.
from brian.
it completely made my birthday.
my aunt blythe and cousin liza came over bearing gifts.
i was so happy i got to see them!
then i did some errands i needed to do.
there's just something about being out and about on your birthday.
you feel different.  happier, more special, older, wiser.
i enjoyed it.
then we skyped with becky in DC.
i miss that girl so much.  i also got to see my grandparents who got home from africa on my birthday.
then i opened all my gifts.  i love them all!  i am so spoiled and grateful for my loving family.
they are truly the best birthday celebrators ever.

then the highlight of the evening:
the hayes family loves a good it's a good thing we live in las vegas!
las night we tried the wicked spoon at the cosmopolitan.
it is sort of new and we had never been.
i think i died and went to heaven.
not only is the atmosphere lovely and wholesome, but the food is to die for!!!
everything is portioned in little pans, cups, or tiny chinese take out boxes!
the food was top notch.  everything i ate tasted better than whatever i ate before it.
i pretended i was adventurous and got this little sardine dish:
then i thought about it.  and didn't eat it.
def not wasting the space in my stomach.
the desserts were the highlight.  i was in chocoholic heaven.
mmm mmm mmm.
good thing calories don't count on your birthday.  ###

tres leches.....mmm yessssech

today is my dear dad's birthday!!  happy birthday, dad.  i sure do love you.

my birthday is actually tomorrow....i cleverly planned that one up in heaven so i could give him the best birthday present ever in beautiful self in the form of a sophisticated newborn baby.

it's hard to top that each year, but this year i really tried when i made him the "tres leches" (3 creme) cake from the pioneer woman.
i have seen this picture all over pinterest and have wanted to make it for forever:

i mean, doesn't that just make your mouth water?!  it was a major success.  here is the recipe:

  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 5 whole Eggs
  • 1 cup Sugar, Divided
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1/3 cup Milk
  • 1 can Evaporated Milk
  • 1 can Sweetened, Condensed Milk
  • 1/4 cup Heavy Cream
  • 1 pint Heavy Cream, For Whipping
  • 3 Tablespoons Sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 x 13 inch pan liberally until coated.
Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Separate eggs.
Beat egg yolks with 3/4 cup sugar on high speed until yolks are pale yellow. Stir in milk and vanilla. Pour egg yolk mixture over the flour mixture and stir very gently until combined.
Beat egg whites on high speed until soft peaks form. With the mixer on, pour in remaining 1/4 cup sugar and beat until egg whites are stiff but not dry.
Fold egg white mixture into the batter very gently until just combined. Pour into prepared pan and spread to even out the surface.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Turn cake out onto a rimmed platter and allow to cool.
Combine condensed milk, evaporated milk, and heavy cream in a small pitcher. When cake is cool, pierce the surface with a fork several times. Slowly drizzle all but about 1 cup of the milk mixture—try to get as much around the edges of the cake as you can.

Allow the cake to absorb the milk mixture for 30 minutes. To ice the cake, whip 1 pint heavy cream with 3 tablespoons of sugar until thick and spreadable.

Spread over the surface of the cake.

i added a homemade raspberry sauce on top that really spruced it up.  just heat 2 cups raspberries, 1 tbs cornstarch, and about 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup water till it boils.

the cake was as moist as can be inside because you let the 3 creme mixture sink into it.  mmm.
it's like a buttery angel food cake took a bath in fresh creme.  try it! ###

crazy week!

this past week was beyond amazing.

as much as i love being home with my family in las vegas...i can't help but miss being in provo.  maybe it's because i've spent the happiest 4 years of my life there, but i think it's mostly because brian and so many of my friends are still there.

the fact that nobody bought my provo apartment contract from my management means leslie has a nice big room all to herself...and no one is sleeping in my bed.  aka the perfect place to stay with the perfect person in the perfect place!  (i really hope my landlord doesn't stalk my blog.  how awkward).  SO....i bought a cheap plane ticket to salt lake city and stayed 3 days in provo, then drove home to las vegas with brian.  i'm just going to throw it out there...i am an absolute genius for having that idea.  it was a FAB week.

i was so excited when my plane touched down in SLC!!  i sprinted outside where the dashing-working-man brian campa picked me up.  we were just kind of excited to see each other.  we went to visit brian's work: the williams building at research park next to the U of U campus.  then we ate dinner with the matkins and cute cousins.  i miss my utah family so much!

after that, we headed over to city creek mall.  oh man, it did not disappoint.  i have wanted to go there forever because they have all my favorite stores: ann taylor, j. crew, banana republic, and H&M.  i could have spent forever there, thank goodness we had to leave when they closed.

when we got back to provo, we hit up the yogurtland and caught up on SMASH....which we both love.  it's so good!  watch it now if you have never seen it.  amen.

the next two days were spent with plenty of friends while brian had to go to work all day.  i was able to hang out lots with the roomie: leslie paige macfarlane.  we ate cafe rio, went shopping, and got our nails did.
i also got to see my soul sister ahlin, dear aunt shirley, broadcast bestie chelsey tobar, lifelong buddy kevin KJ johnson, and our favorite married couple: the whites.  it was so fun being in provo and not having to study.  the weather was wonderful, and i was so happy to just walk around and enjoy life.

brian and i enjoyed a dinner eating the best thai food in the world (or outside of thailand): spicy thai.  mmmm.  we always call take out and then eat our pad thai in various locations.  i swear they know us and our regular order by now. for dinner the next night, i got to experience brian's crock pot skills!  did you know he is a master of the crock pot!?  oh yea baby.

on friday we hit the road and got to vegas just in time to see brian's cousin play in a collegiate softball game.  she plays for SDSU, and they totes beat the evil UNLV rebels that night.  WOO!

we went to the game the next day, and i wish i could say that they beat them again.  oh well!  lizzie got to come along.  it was like 100 degrees and she had the finish reading "catcher in the rye."  the heat and festivities made it hard to focus, so brian's family suggested she read in the bathroom where the air conditioning was blasting.  haha.  it was hilarious...and productive!!  go lizzie.  you are awesome.

that night, we had a BBQ in my backyard with my family and brian's parents.  it was lovely.  it had cooled down a lot, and i swear all food tastes better outside.  still not sure how i didn't get any pictures.  (curse words).

later that night, my dad took me to see the las vegas philharmonic perform in the fancy Smith Center in downtown las vegas.  it was so amazing!  that building is beautiful, it was like i was at a broadway show.  anddd everyone there was seriously over 100 years old.  i felt like a fetus.

on mother's day, we went to my ward.  later on, brian watched "once upon a time" with me.  bless him.  it was the season finale...obvi it was a must to watch.

and finally today, we woke up early and walked sierra dog....and i opened some beautiful gifts from brian for my upcoming birthday.  we celebrated early by going out to lunch to my favorite place: PEI WEI.  mmmm.  then brian left.  dang it.  he is already back in p-town and i wish he was still here.

this week was insane and absolutely exhausting.  but it was so perfect.  i feel like i have been going and going for forever and now i just want to take an eternal nap.  but hey, i'm not complaining.  i'm so glad utah is close, and so glad that i have the time and ability to go see my friends and family there.  i hope to do it again soon.  ###

mothers day.

no amount of presents....words...or actions can express how much i love my mother.  she is the most giving, clever, and funny person i have ever met.  and we certainly spoiled her for mom's day this year.  she deserves it!

also: church yesterday was amazing.  our whole program in sacrament meeting was just musical numbers, and lizzie and i were in the choir.  i also got to play the organ in sacrament meeting!  AHHH!  i have been practicing for 5 months...and yesterday was my debut.  i somehow didn't make any mistakes.  mother's day miracle.  brian and his mom were able to be there too, which was wonderful!!

hope everyone had a great mother's day! ###
