love it

gees i love my major! both times i have attended my advanced reporting class this week, i have left wanting to be a better journalist.

we watched this inspiring clip today from news legend bob schieffer:

the man knows what he is talking about. we have a great duty as reporters, and this is no easy business. i have been having meltdowns every day about WHERE i am going to work....WHAT i am going to be doing....WHICH station i am going to work for...and is this REALLY worth all the time and hard work??

those melt downs happen to everyone in this major. it isn't an easy 9-5 job. it is hard, and mentally/physically/emotionally tasking. however...it is WORTH it. and i am proud to be going into a field that makes a difference and that requires a great mental capacity. i hope to be the kind of journalist that brings real news to real people who need it...no more casey anthony stuff. or, as my professors says, "cookie-cutter reporters." nope. not me.

happy reporting. i begin working for the Channel 11 News as a reporter next week. i can't wait. i will post my stories on the blog...duh. ###

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

the first day of school is always hilarious........especially at BYU.

i have a "first day of school picture" for each year of school ever since kindergarten.
these pictures are always taken in front of the front door..and are ALWAYS awkward.

here is a gem from freshman year of high school:
whattttt wassss iiiii wearingggg!??!

here is mine from last year. my outfit improved slightly.

yesterday, leslie had already gone to school as i got ready to go to campus with my chosen cute/not too cute/casual/fall-ish outfit and backpack on. i was saddened that no one was there to snap my photo to add to the FDOS collection. so i did the dorkiest thing of my life. i put my camera on self-timer and smiled big and took my first day of school picture.

i would post it, but it is far too embarrassing. however, i am sure posterity will appreciate it and not know that i took it by myself.

i love the first day of school, because everyone is all cute looking and tan and extra excited. then we all look like death and overly stressed out on the second day of school. but the first day is sure fun.

i love BYU. i don't want to graduate. ###

PS- this is a first day of school masterpiece. hahaha. some people.

school supplies

best family home evening ever: massive school supply shopping trip.
half for us, half for needy children for the school year. so much fun. so many school supplies. this is my last school supply shopping trip....ever. (yes, i go every year. i love it). CIN be a senior??? :( sad.
after they factored in all the coupons and sales...our receipt was EIGHT feet long. seriously. i felt like i was on extreme couponing.

ruffin' it

this weekend, my family and i roughed it. well...that might be too strong of a term.
........we were all snuggly in our little pop-up with ample food and even a solar heated shower, but it was rougher than usual.

camping has always been a favorite family activity, and this weekend was one of our best trips (minus the fact that we were missing becky, even though her absence meant muchos more sleeping room...bonus!)....jk becky, we missed you.

we were up in the sierra nevada mountains, near a cute little town called bishop in CA. on saturday, we did one of the most beautiful hikes ever! we climbed allll the way up to the tip top of a mountain, where it suddenly looked like switzerland, with bright flowers, meadows, and little lakes with water so blue i was convinced it was fake. i no longer feel the need to hike the alps, because i am pretty sure the sierra mountains are just as beautiful.

don't believe me? check it:

we also saw the oldest living thing ever ever ever. aka, a bristlecone pine tree that has been around wayyy longer (x's a million) than jesus. except the stupid tree name "methusalah" is sooo precious and old that they don't tell you exactly which tree it is in this huuuge forest of bristlecones. (for fear that tacky tourists, such as myself, would snap off a twig or two for the ole' scrapbook). but i spent an hour of my life laying eyes on all 1000 trees so that i could, in fact, say "i have laid eyes on the oldest living thing."

and no, it's not these two. har har har. (sorry mom and dad, that joke practically told itself).

i love camping! summer, family, s'mores, the great outdoors, exercise, and old things. all my favorite things. happy trails to you. ###

PiNtErEsT

my life is full of ironies.

for example: i recently deactivated my facebook so as to spend less time withering away on social media.

sooo why, oh why, did this have to happen the exact same week i became unhealthily addicted to PINTEREST!? (which i was first introduced to last october by my trendy and cool friend taylor, but rejected because i knew i would become addicted. #inevitable)...

the perfect definition of pinterest, for those who may not know it:
Photobucket

another irony, i found that definition ON pinterest.

anyways, i justify using pinterest with the idea that it is, in fact, "bettering myself," by learning how to do crafty crafts with my old socks...or decorate my future children's rooms using felt and tinfoil, or whatever.

i have also been enjoying all the inspirational phrases you come upon on pinterest, such as this one, yet another irony:
Photobucket
guaranteed the only people who will ever find this cute gem on pinterest have already wasted a majority of their lives online already.

but i will repin it anyways, just cause it is cute.

happy pinning!!! ###

charity

i shared this video for FHE tonight.

i forgot how great it is:

"Without charity—or the pure love of Christ—whatever else we accomplish matters little. With it, all else becomes vibrant and alive." -Joseph B. Wirthlin

happy birthday JOE!

HAPPY 22nd BIRTHDAY TO MY #1 JONAS BROTHER...JOE JONAS!!!

yes. lizzie and i DID stay up until midnight to celebrate it. we are, in fact, true fans.

weddings...i LOVE weddings!

well the deed is done. and, for that matter....the reed is done. megan has officially become megan reed gneiting. it's official on facebook...and as we all know, a marriage is not totally real until the facebook change has been made.

speaking of made, being a maid of honor is quite fun! it means you get to make a speech at the rehearsal dinner that makes you sob like a baby at the end.

it means you get to take pictures with the wedding party, which all happens to be approximately 7 feet tall. (reese's family is even taller than megans!) i thought i was smart, so i wore tall heels. well...they sunk into the grass for every pictures. can't wait to see those gems were i look like a midget.

it means you get to hold the bouquet and cater to the bride's every need! i could NOT have been happier to do all these things. megan is more than a friend to me, she is a sister...and i can't imagine being anywhere else other than right by her side during the whole day. it was a truly magical day. they are so happy and in love, and it makes me feel happy and in love just watching them!

while we are on the subject of weddings...my roommate and dearest darlingest friend karalyn hastings is now a married woman! as of about 5 hours ago! we were roommates freshman year. we grew up about 5 minutes away from one another...went to high schools next to each other....even danced together when we were babies. however, the rooming sitch was RANDOM and awesome. the fates had it in for us to be friends. and dear friends is what we are.

karalyn has saved me from over-plucking my eyebrows...weird boys....conquered BYU tap dance...and has traveled with me around 4 different countries. we studied abroad in london, paris, and denmark. we have seen the world and now her world is just beginning because she is married and blissfully happy! yay!! i cannot wait to see her tonight at the reception.

i've always had a fondness for karalyn...not sure it was reciprocated. haha.

healthy cookies! not an oxymoron.

welp my life just became a lot happier. because i discovered that there are such things as HEALTHY COOKIES. yes...people...they exist! and they are quite tasty, too. i wish i was smart and creative like whoever the heck came up with the idea of using BANANAS rather than sugar to sweeten a great twist on chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. there is basically nothng unhealthy in these little guys. and they are bite sized...which either means i justify eating MORE of them because they are smaller...or i eat less of them because i don't want to have to tell someone i ate 28 cookies in one sitting. here is all you need:

3 large, ripe bananas, well mashed (about 1 1/2 cups)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 olive oil (or coconut oil, but i didn't have any)
2 cups rolled oats
2/3 cup almond meal (i got it at whole foods, near the flour)
1/3 cup coconut, finely shredded & unsweetened
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
6 – 7 ounces chocolate chips

isn't that a picture of healthy living!? yummy.

just in case you were wondering what a bunch of mashed bananas looks like. i thought it was awesome:

Here is what you do:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl combine the bananas, vanilla extract, and coconut oil. Set aside. In another bowl whisk together the oats, almond meal, shredded coconut, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips. The dough is a bit looser than a standard cookie dough, but def don’t worry about it. Drop dollops of the dough, each about 2 teaspoons in size, an inch apart, onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 12 – 14 minutes.

Watch them because they are small and can burn easy. One batch I did was burned just cause I left them in 30 seconds too long. WHOOOPS.

i highly recommend these. they made me thing of my old roommate reesa and all her healthy eating and baking. i am channeling her skills. oh yeaa.

happy healthy eating! ###

surprise(s)

i had a lovely surprise waiting for me at a home when i got back from lunch today with sara...my broadcast friend.

Photobucket

geees i was smiling so big when lizzie showed me. it really made my day! fact: the way to my heart is through sending me fruit arrangements in cute orange vases with nice notes attached. thanks, brian.

then i had to go to the eye doctor and get my eyes DIALATED. which is probably one of my top 4 least favorite things to do. right behind getting a root canal and taking an algebra exam. it seems to effect me more than the average eye-patient. so i sadly had to ditch elder kevin johnson on our harry potter 7.1 plans. (it's really fun having friends come home from missions and introducing them to all the fiiiine entertainment they have been missing).

i felt bad i had to ditch, cause i couldn't see a darn thing. then i got a doorbell ring and found this gem:

Photobucket

boy! i love ice cream! and although i STILL look like a kitty cat with my big pupils...and am still cowering like smiegel away from any ray of light that reaches my eyes...this day and all these surprises have made my day purrrrrrrfect. i am a lucky girl. ###

Leslie's Visit!

Leslie came to visit HB!!

it was an amazing weekend and very very epic.

i missed that girl....quite a bit. but all is well....we are going to be reunited as roomies soon enough! (which is basically the only reason i have to look forward to the end of summer).

we did MANY fun things. fun things...and funNY things. such as attend a big time rush concert....and i thought my tween band loving days were coming to a close. OH NO. going to that concert was ohhh so fun. i am happy to encourage lizzie in her love of the BTR...as long as she still admits the Jo Bros are still superior. #obviously.

Photobucket

we enjoyed MANY hours at the beach....walking, runnning, or laying in our tanning nests.

Photobucket

brian also made an appearance! i sure do love when he does that.

Photobucket

we also toured newport beach sufficiently, and made some friends with some sea critters. ok...leslie KILLED some sea critters, but it was unintentional.

Photobucket

it was a very festive and glorious weekend!!! we must repeat 2012. yes.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM

yes....i did stay up till 2 am last night with lizzie baking...wrapping...and decorating. we have become the birthday elves. HOW FESTIVE!

AD

obviously the only ONLY good thing about going home to las vegas (besides the marriage of megan, my dog waiting, my family being there, and kevin home) is this:

i left my arrested development DVDs in las vegas. and i obviously have to complete my summer marathon.

ok, so maybe there are lots of good things about being home. i just want to watch some AD. i just miss it. it's as Ann as the nose on Plain's face.

brighter than the sun

sorry for being a bad, bad, bad blogger. i became overwhelmed and failed to post for the last few weeks. let's just say, i am enjoying my summertime spent in southern california. immensely. and i don't want to leave it. don't want to leave this:

Photobucket
Photobucket

ahhhhh. summer. marry me. sooo i'm basically addicted to colbie caillat and her beachy tunes. i have been loving her new album. check out my new summer anthem that makes me oh soo happy:

Stop me on the corner
I swear you hit me like a vision
I wasn’t expecting
But who am I to tell fate where it’s supposed to go with it?
Don’t you blink you might miss it
See we got a right to just love it or leave it
You find it and keep it
Cause it ain’t every day you get the chance to say

Oh, this is how it starts, lighting strikes the heart
It goes off like a gun, brighter than the sun
Oh, it could be the stars, falling from the sky
Shining how we want, brighter than the sun

this summer was basically meant to be. and it was PERFECT! but...it's not over yet. still going, and still loving it. ###
