from NY (2) LA

from coast..........

to coast......

It’s true. After months (literally) and MONTHS of praying, thinking, calling, resume-ing, interviewing, wondering, and hoping that something would work out…I have a summer plan. And it is actually better than I thought it could ever be.

I was told by one of my broadcast professors at the beginning of the semester that he thought I could land an internship with NY1 news, a 24-hour news network in New York City. I, of course, doubted myself. I thought I would try it….but just so I could say that I could. I never thought that I would actually get the job. Because I was sure that I wouldn’t…I started looking at other news internships for the summer. I really wanted to do one at NBC4 in Los Angeles. When I would spend the summer in Huntington this was the station we would watch. I pulled whatever string I could (thanks to Jen Staff) and got an interview with a producer there! The interview was great and she offered me the job right on the phone. I was so excited. But my life got complicated when I found out that I was also accepted at NY1.

Which to choose?

Good question. The LA internship in the #2 broadcast market…or the NYC internship in the #1 broadcast market. Both were such incredible opportunities. I was torn up about what to do for WEEKS because I wanted to do both and get the maximum experiences in the world of broadcasting. I could do east coast and see Becky all the time…or west coast and see my parents and Lizzie all the time.

It. Was. So. Confusing.

Basically…. after some soul searching…I realized that the answer was SO obvious and I could not believe it took me so long to realize. I COULD DO BOTH. Hahaha. I know…I am crazy. Seriously. I will probably die of broadcast overload this summer. But it’s the truth!

I am so lucky I get to go on the NYC Internship Program with a bunch of the BYU communications students interning in the specific fields all around the city. I get to live in the big city at a place called the International House near Columbia University for 7.5 weeks. I get to see Becky…turn 21 in NYC…see Broadway shows..and work at one of the best news stations in the country.

Then it’s off to LA literally right after NY1 ends. I will stay in Huntington Beach/Pasadena with the Ngo’s. I get to enjoy the beach…the sun…family…Mexican food…and covering awesome stories in LA and HOLLYWOOD! Hello. Awesome. I will somehow track down Joe Jonas for an interview. Promise.

Moral of the story is this: when you think you are going to have absolutely zero options for productive things to do in your life: doors open. Sometimes too many doors for you to handle. But you will eventually find a way to walk through all of them.

life.

here is my life last night:

for some reason i felt like it would be a good idea to take pictures of my daily life. like going to a byu intramural game...7-11....and sitting on my floor watching brian ice his knee so he can teach me how to dougie.

i learned that i am so white, and cannot dougie. but i have other talents.

sunday makes me happy

i am sooooo happy right now!

"WHY ANNA!?"

becauseeeee of.....well....lots of reasons:

-i have a great family that i get to see ohhh so soooooon when becky graduates
-i have great friends who make me happy and make me laugh and interpretive dance to EFY songs in snuggies in my bedroom
-i performed in sacrament meeting with leslie today (piano/violin) and it went great
-i had a cold this weekend and i drank wheatgrass/took zinc pills/prayed it would go away AND IT DID! i have been healed
-i saw mccall magness today and sat in her bedroom facebook stalking for 4 hours. yup. we are out of control.
-my summer is going to be full of travels and sisters and adventures and newscasts
-i went to a great musical fireside tonight with brian and we heard some great musical numbers that made us happy we are mormon. hip hip hooray for the church and for music!
-i have a lot of homework that i put off till now...meaning i get to stay up late and listen to music and finish it in my kitchen. which i totally don't mind
-brian introduced me to a great new song that describes how i am feeling. if only you could see him interpretive dance to it:

this week was also a MAJOR success because my beloved dolan family was in town for a ritzy ski trip! they are good at those. and brian and i are the beneficiaries. meaning we get to enjoy FINE cowboy dining/sleigh rides/cute cousins/hot tubs/tin plate sledding/clue games/ella playing the violin/so much more.

we experienced the COWBOY DINNER on wednesday. something i had only heard about till this week. basically, you meet at a ski lift and then get picked up by a cowboy named gary who pulls you up to the "snowed inn" cabin where you eat a huuuuge delicious cowboy dinner. i may or may not have eaten more fresh trout than anyone else there. it is so good and so fun. they have live country music and all the little cousins were dancing together. caaa-ute!! the cowboys are hilarious. they let the kids drive the sleigh and made fun of brian for carrying my purse for me. hahaha. "what is that..some kind of european man bag??" ohhh gary. we also got to go "tin plate sledding" which is exactly what is sounds like. you sit on a tin plate and sled down a hill. good times. we also enjoyed the dolans private hot tub with a bed inside of it. ahhhh. and we played clue. and had a violin recital courtesy of ella. and then i almost cried when we had to leave because i much prefer being in a nice condo with my family in park city than being in my little apartment in provo. it's ok though.

here are some pictures of the evening. my camera broke halfway through dinner. sadd faceee. :( it's been dying for awhile now...but at least i was able to document the first half of the night.

broadcasting network dinner

this week is COMMS WEEK. happy comms week! what does that even mean?? good question. 'tis the week we celebrate being comms students..basically.

danielle and i went to the networking dinner where you hob nob with the rich and famous and make connections. well...we were late (in true anna/danielle fashion). and got a random table. but it ended up being amazing. seriously. we sat next to a newspaer editor named tom who was both kind and hilarious. and i got to sit next to one of my favorite people, frau clair pingree, the newly called sister missionary of germany. and we even made a new friend named hallie. the food was good. the convo was good. and the speaker was good.

it was a success. and my mentor, KSL reporter jen stagg was there! she has been a big help to me this semester and answered all my "i'm freaking out and nervous about being a news reporter" questions i have. yeeeeee.

here's the pics:

after the dinner, we met up with brian and went to cheer on my incredibly talented roommate leslie and watch her dominate intramural basketball. brian tried to teach me how to shimmer like the jimmer. faillllllllllllllll. i am not athletic. but it's awesome when all your friends are.

something provo is good at.

provo might not be great at many things....jk guys....but seriously. i realized this week that it has some fiiiine dining options!
Photobucket
brian took me to this place called BLUE LEMON in alpine. it was ta-ta-ta-tasty!! it is an artsy/healthy place. i highly recommend it! we were celebrating my decisions of life this summer. which is soon shall blog about because it has been consuming the past few months of my life. good news is a have a plan. woo!

Photobucket

anyways. celebration dinner=appetizers. and they don't disappoint at the blue lemon. we had fresh fruit drizzled in honey nectar:
Photobucket
and hummus:
Photobucket
and then our dinner were equally delish! i enjoyed the fish tacos and brian had some vegetable pasta.
Photobucket

if you are ever in alpine, go to the blue lemon. amen.

another FINE dining establishment that i have frequented more than once since it opened last week is yogurtland!! the most DELICIOUS yogurt in all of provo. they have them in las vegas...and it is one of my places i have to go every time i go home. lizzie and i love it.

leslie and i also discovered it is a prime place to both get asked out by the same person publicly. yup. that happened.

also, my FHE husband Dan is so domestic. he brought over a homemade PIE for FHE. the pi day celebration continues...apparently. it was great. i thought it was pretty so i took a pic.

jimmer fredette...nothin but net.

teach me how to jimmer....

sweet sixteen! my class tonight has been cancelled and BYU has gone crazy. the game vs. florida today at 5:27. such a specific time. why? IDK.

i am jealous of my broadcast friends that get to go see the game. why was i not a sports reporter? fail.

3.14 day

i am feeling rather festive lately. i realized i never even blogged about the other important holiday of the week! PI DAY!! (3.14/3-14=pi day). you comprendo?? march 14th is PI DAY and that can only mean one thing:
PIE!!!!!!

although i am not the biggest pie fan in the world, i simply can't pass up a holiday. the day also served as a magical opportunity to have patrick down to celebrate the holiday and of course watch the lakers game with his best friend for life brian campa.

we made a no bake cookie pie that i made once for an FHE activity. it's super super easy and SUPER tasty so i thought i would include the recipe. it can also be found online, but i altered it a little and i think my version is better than the original. just sayin. here ya go!

ingredients:
1 chocolate graham cracker pie crust
1 tub of cool whip
1 box of chips ahoy cookies
1 butterfinger bar
1 cup milk
1 bottle of hershey's chocolate syrup

steps:
1. spread a layer of cool whip on the bottom of the pie crust

2. dunk the chips ahoy cookies in the milk until they are soft (but not too soft), and place them lovingly on top of the layer of cool whip

3. drizzle a healthy amount of chocolate syrup over the cookies

3. spread another layer of cool whip over the cookies, and then top that layer with more soft chips ahoy cookies and chocolate syrup until the pie crust is full. it usually takes about three layers to accomplish this.

4. spread a final layer of cool whip on top of the pie

5. put the butterfinger bar in a baggie and roll over it with a rolling pin until it is nice and crumbly

6. put a squiggly line of chocolate syrup on top of the pie and then sprinkle over it with butterfinger dust

7. chill the pie for about 5 hours. OR if you are like me and can't wait that long..just freeze it for an hour or so!

8. eat it all.

there you are. an easy and yummy recipe that is a great activity.

typical. leslie and i in the kitchen slaving away while brian and patrick watch the lakers game and talk about basketball. awesome.
Photobucket

this what i look at all day. brian looking at his march madness bracket on his iPhone. and checking scores. it's ok...good thing i like basketball!!

yummmm

we were the drizzlers.

leslie and patrick were the dunkers.

My Favorite Holiday

if you know me at all...or know anything about you. you probably know that i love green. i always have. i was a weird child and thought that loving green would make me cool or something. (it didn't) but i still love green! i think it is a beautiful color. of course, when i was a green loving child...i declared that my favorite holiday was st. patrick's day. i loved that everyone HAD to wear green. and if they didn't...i would of course chase them down and pinch them. and when all the other kids were out making friends and playing kickball...i think i was probably by myself on my hands and knees searching the ground for a four leaf clover. definitely. i remember doing that. i knew i had some irish blood in me, and i absolutely loved st. patty's day.

i still jokingly say that st. patrick's day is my favorite holiday. well. i guess it is. at home my mom always makes corn beef and cabbage. i wish we weren't all vegetarians or i would probably be at home right now eating it all. and yes....i still hate that everyone thinks it's cool to NOT wear green. ugh. could they not. no worries, i don't pinch them anymore.

since i was little my dad has given me a st. patrick's day pin to wear for the holiday. he knows how i love it. i have so many great st. patty's day pins! some of them light up. some of them say cutie things on them. and some are just plain. today...i went out and checked the mail and saw this:
Photobucket
my dad mailed it to me! it made me so happy! he is such a great day. and who else can say that their dad signs their name "daddy-o!?" so hip. i love it. thanks for the pin, father.
Photobucket
i am also sporting some festive socks my festive mother gave to me. she loves her holiday socks more than she loves me. i think they are pretty cute.
Photobucket

today was also a great st. patrick's day because every thursday morning i do the 8:30 news break on classical89 radio. i write my own newscast...and today my boss told me i could say "top of the mornin to you!" to start it. haha. i was cracking up and even tried an accent. (fail). i also wished everyone that the luck of the irish be with them on their morning commute. good times. i wish they could have seen me wearing my green outfit...but alas...therein lies of beauty of radio.
another reason today was a lovely day for holiday: i got to go to zupa's with my dear friend becky fisher from EFY! i love zupas. almost as much as i love becky! they had green chocolate covered strawberries. clearly i loved that.

this morning staley texted me and told me she aways thinks of me on st. patricks day because i love it. and our freshman year we threw this rockin' st. patty's day party. good times.
Photobucket

i tried to throw yet another rockin party this year. well..ok..a rave. i even made an F-book invite for all my friends. (all 4 of them).
Photobucket
this party was definitely a big fat anna hayes fail. seriously. only two people are attending! and both don't even live in provo! i am not even attending for sure. now that is depressing. so..i learned a valuable lesson today...don't try to throw a rave. it will probably fail.

jk guys. it was a joke. but still. i think if i DID throw a rave it would be a fail.

anyways. this holiday makes me miss my family. don't worry, i just skyped with becky. she is great. but i miss her.

top o the evening to ya. maybe i can convince brian to watch "p.s. i love you" with me tonight. such a great irish movie. one of my favorites. but i always cry. i will leave you with this song from the film. it's one of my all time favorite jigs to jig to:
