amazing pioneer story.

last night i went to one of the greatest firesides of my life.

it was given by two of the sisters of majorie pay hinckley, one of my favorite people! there names are sister baird and sister loyt, and i feel like i am spelling those names wrong but i don't know the right way. sorry.
i was worried the fireside would be crowded because i knew they would be outstanding. however, it was hardly full in the chapel. which was sort of sad. but also sort of good because i was able to talk with them for a while after the fireside. they are hilarious! seriously they were cracking jokes and it was hilarious.

i wanted to share the story that they told us because:

A. it is inspiring

B. it is a pioneer story

C. it is an example of one of
Heavenly Father's miracles

here it is in my own words, which are not as good as theirs.

Sister Hinckley's great grandfather converted to the church in England. He took his big family across the ocean to America, where they crossed the plains like so many other saints. The journey was very difficult. It was freezing and there was no food. He lost more than one of his kids along the trip. His wife gave birth to a baby girl they named Edith on the journey. She lived about six weeks. She died and they buried her. Sister Hinckley's grandma, Mary Goble Pay, was very sad about this. She didn't want the coyotes to find the body and dig it up. She refused to continue on the journey. Her father found her crying over the grave and spoke with her. They marked and covered the grave and, after some convincing from her father, kept going.

The journey was very hard. The family was traveling with the Martin Handcart Company. Many people died each day. But, her family felt strongly about going to Zion and knew they had to continue. One day, Mary was out searching for water and got disoriented and lost . She wandered all day in snow up to her knees. She had frostbite and never really got over it during the rest of the journey. It caused her a lot of pain. The day before arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, Mary's mother died. She was the one that felt so strongly about going to Zion, so the family was devastated she died only a day before seeing the Salt Lake Valley. They kept her body in the handcart with them so they could carry her into Zion. Brigham Young wept when he saw the tattered and tired company come in. A doctor looked at Mary's legs and said he would have to amputate them off. However, Brigham Young looked at them and told the doctor to only cut off the toes. The doctor said that was a horrible idea, but Mary chose to follow the prophet, and had her toes cut off by a saw and butcher knife. By some miracle, her legs healed and she was able to use them the rest of her life. She was strong member of the church for the rest of her life.

Hundreds of years later, one of these sisters of Sister Hinckley was contacted by someone who told her they had something she might want. This person had found an old grave marker in Idaho many years ago and it had been kicking around their house for forever. But they felt like they should keep it. They had recently done some research on the name on the marker, which read:
"Our Baby
Edith Goble
born Sept 31 1851
died Nov 4 1851"

They had come to find out this was a relative of Sister Hinckley, and worked hard contacting the family through trying to get ahold of President Hinckley...who's office rejected their efforts to find them. The prophet's office said they knew this was something he would not really care about because he was so busy and his wife's health was rapidly failing. They were very wrong. The people who had found this marker did not give up and worked hard to find the family. They finally tracked these sisters down, who were overjoyed and drove up to Idaho to pick it up. the grave had somehow ended up in Idaho all the way from Wyoming. It was indeed the marker of baby Edith....made from an old piece of a handcart....complete with a carved heart at the top. It was in remarkable condition! When President Hinckley heard what his office had said, he was shocked. He was, of course, incredibly interested in having that piece of history. Sister Hinckley passed away in April of 2004, about a month after seeing the headstone.

I love that story. When Sister Baird and Loyt told the story, you could really feel the spirit. They said they knew Heavenly Father had given them that grave marker because he knew they needed to share the story with everyone and help us all see how much Heavenly Father loves us. They told us we need to stand a little taller and try a little harder because these pioneers gave up so much for us. So true! Coming from someone who has a lot of pioneer heritage and parents who make sure i know the stories of my ancestors, i want to try a little harder. We are very lucky to have such EASY lives. We don't have to bury our babies and sisters on the path to Utah anymore, but our ancestors did. Seeing this make-shift headstone reminded me of that, and i am so grateful i had the chance to hear this story and feel inspired to be a better Latter-Day Saint.

this is the complete story i found online told MUCH better than i told it:

fun weekend.

last weekend was the long awaited long weekend of president's day! we get president's day off...unlike so many other universities...because BYU won't give us a spring break. i don't think they trust us....
booooooo.

anyways. we had lots of plans for the weekend. lots and lots. starting off with a visit to park city to see my beloved family! i dragged brian and leslie along, and we had so much fun. my aunt chantal and her family were here for a ski trip. uncle justin and his fam also joined in on the fun. we enjoyed their swanky ritzy condo, and went sledding right outside where they were staying! it was amazing. sledding sort of terrifies me, so i definitely overcame some fears. cousins bj, ella, jack, and noelle were SO HAPPY the whole time. on one run, i went with cousin ella. she informed me as soon as we reached the bottom of the hill that i dragged my feet the entire time and it made us go slow. haha. oops. i was apparently inherently trying to slow us down out of fear. the scariest time was when i went with brian. no offense to him, but he is a terrible steer-er. he has many other talents, however. so it's ok. also, he was apparently confused about where we were and the current season. he basically has no winter clothes. uncle barr gave him some, so that was nice. haha. poor california kid.

we had a delish dinner of fish tacos...yummmmy. and then we all enjoyed the hot tub. (and the "warming tub"). my little cute cousin noelle LOVES hot tubs. i think the only reason we get visits in las vegas from the matkins is because noelle loves aunt tasha's hot tub. she was so happy. it was really cute. the hot tub was especially funny because jack decided to pelt me with snowballs whenever possible. of course then all the other little cousins followed his good example. dang it.

basically park city was so fun. major success. family time with the matkins is always a success, and having leslie and brian there made it even better!

saturday was the big justin bieber date. brian and leslie's date patrick are officially the best sports in the whole world and should get an award for being nice dates. they let us drag them to the justin bieber 3d movie NEVER SAY NEVER. the date started with a 1, 2, 3 expereinceinvolving me and leslie and brian on the road again to SLC to get patrick. he lives on a majestic hill next to jazz players. he is a PBD. (pretty big deal). then we went to settebello's pizza, which is a realllly great pizza restaurant with delish pizzas made from ingredients from italy. wowie. i haven't been there since last fall, and i ordered the exact same thing i ordered last fall: the spicy diablos pizza. it was so spicy that is made me sweat and cry and top that with everyone else laughing at me it's just a bad combo. but it was still very tasty. also: notice our shirts in these photos. underneath those are some festive justin bieber shirts that we whipped out right before the movie. haha. leslie bought 4 shirts at the mall so we had options. haha. had to support.

the justin bieber movie....don't judge me...WAS AMAZING!! seriously! i think everyone should see it. it's hilarious and even inspiring. yes, i am being serious. i appreciate brian even more after that movie because he for reals liked it. he is a self-proclaimed "belieber" now. i think i even saw him getting a little teary-eyed during the emotional parts. haha. of course i cried during "one less lonely girl." it was touching. i am now going through a massive justin bieber phase of my life and can't stop listening to him.

then we ended the night with shakes at hires, which was out of control. bieber apparentlymakes us all hyper. and then we sat on patrick's spacious couch and watched the NBA dunk contest.

rest of the weekend=more basketball watching at staley and michael's apartment along with a delicious homemade dinner by mrs. white. SO domestic! and then president's day we made no bakes and watched the bachelor. duh. it's what we do. but i didn't take pictures. fail.

anyways.
those are the highlights of my weekend. i wish it could be president's day weekend every weekend. definitely.

missing L-town.

I wrote a SONNET for my creative writing class.

I write a lot of poems in that class. But this one, I wanted to share.

This afternoon it started to snow.

Outside it was cold and dark and gray.

It was one of those fiercely cold days.

So I stared out at the gloomy sight and I let my thoughts flow.

There was only one thing I really wanted to know.

Why couldn’t I be where I was a year ago today?

At a place that felt like home, even though I was far away.

Where my life revolved around The Tube, funny accents, and Shakespeare shows.

I lived in a dream-like centre, much larger than any flat.

I was always so happy….I don’t think I ever frowned!

I ate endless gelato and nutella. It’s a miracle I didn’t get fat.

A night with too much homework was the only thing that would get you down.

And then, today, my mind came back to where I am really at.

Back here in Utah, forever missing my precious London town.

V Day.

did you have a good valentine's day?? i did. valentine's day is better spent with a valentine. i am trying hard to not make this a typical annoying mushy blog post like so many i have been seeing lately. here goes nothing!

this holiday i love to hate got the best of me this year, and i had problems making fun of it when it turned out to be so great!! with the weekend spent with my family and lots of valentine's treats...then an FHE activity of the dating game which i somehow won (what does that mean??), and then a night out with brian....i had a great day!

here are the cupcakes i made for brian:

thanks to lizzie for the rose idea and mom for the red velvet help. and to arrin for her frosting skills and leslie for her flower making skills and reesa for her gum. clearly is was a group effort to get these little guys done! they turned out great and delish.
Photobucket

see, brian likes them!! yay.

we went to go see "midway to heaven" because brian is nice and indulges my weird movie requests. haha we were probs the youngest people there. basically...it was a typical cheesy mormon movie that we HAD to go see because it stars one of our least favorite people: michelle money from the bachelor. she is crazy and weird and i have no idea why she was in this movie. but we enjoyed it!! i might have even cried. embarrassing.

then brian gave me a rose. how sweet! he asked me if i would accept it, which i thought was funny. (bachelor joke). what a crack up!
Photobucket
i have no idea why i am on the ground for this picture or how i ended up there. awesome.
Photobucket

pictures of us trying to not be awkward. we had to try many times. haha.

well this past weekend...i went home to ViV@ LA$ V3g@$!!! it was a fabulous 3 day trip of food, family, and fun. the purpose of the trip was to go see my sweet sister star (sort of) in the GVHS msuical, "thoroughly modern millie."

she starred as the dishwasher, and cute flapper girl with the big smile and even bigger hair. courtesy of me. it was a fabulos musical!!! made me miss the high school days.

i of course failed at taking pictures. but i DID find my camera! heyoo!! the weekend consisted of seeing the musical twice, making too many valentine's treats with my mom, taking baca on errands, running in the HOT WEATHER, seeing my dear friends allyson/carly R/and all my high school friends who were in the musical with me my senior year and are now seniors, sleeping, going to pei wei with my dad and mom and baca, and going to a fancy sushi lunch at town square in honor of lizzie. here are some pictures of a wonderful weekend:
