E.F.Y. Denton. Courage to Rise.

June 12th-June 19th. Wow. WHAT A WEEK.

About 8 months ago I applied to be an EFY counselor. I really don’t know why. I felt like I could be good at it. I love the youth, gospel, noisy games and songs, and being a leader. Perfect match. After a lot of drama and late-night-phone booth-interviews in London with the session coordinator, I was hired to be an EFY counselor in Denton, Texas, this past week, as well as in San Antonio in a few weeks. I was so excited, nervous, and scared to live up to the high reputation EFY counselors have. All I ever heard from people when I told them that was what I was doing was this phrase: “An EFY counselor? Oh Anna you were BORN to be an EFY counselor!!!” Really? I doubted. I hope it was true. Now that I am sitting here finally blogging about one of the greatest weeks of my life, I can say it and I don’t care if it sounds prideful. I WAS BORN TO BE AN EFY COUNSELOR! I found my duty in life.

I arrived in the humid glorious state of Texas on Saturday, and drove to the University of North Texas with one of the health counselors. We saw a dead armadillo on the side of the road within five minutes. Welcome to Texas, right? I went though training and immediately knew I would love this week. I was one of the only counselors out of the 20 of us that was not from Texas, but they all embraced me and welcomed me and made me feel so at home. I love all my new counselor friends! We attended church Sunday, had a great fireside with our session directors, the Merrill’s, an amazing couple who really love the youth and church. We were so pumped; we had a big door tag, ice cream party, and got our group lists. I found out I had received 10 girls in the 16-18 age group. That made me so nervous. Looking back, I should have been happy. In my opinion, that is the best age group. But I didn’t realize this then. I was scared they would think I was lame or something, haha, so glad they didn’t because I really am kind of lameee. I couldn’t even sleep that night because I was SO excited. The day of the start of E.F.Y. came, and the week followed.....

When I try to describe it to everyone, I can’t properly. The only word that comes to mind is that of LOVE. So..instead of attempting to give minor details and funny stories from the week (which, there are plenty of…trust me), I decided to make a great list of TEN things I LOVE about E.F.Y.!!! Here it is, accompanied with pictures: enjoy.

1. I love POLOS. Despite the not-so-flattering colors (texas orange and frosted blueberry blue), these are the great outfits we get to wear every single day. They rock, kind of. Really they are hot and not so cute, but we all look professional and stuff, so it's all good.

2. I love CO-COUNSELORS. Becky Fisher and Dan Geiger rocked my world at E.F.Y. Dan brought the experience and knowledge about E.F.Y. and Becky turned out to be my soul sister who was a peach to work with! We got along so great and all taught together so well. Also, Becky and I were called “Becky and Anna” so many times it made me miss my sister Becky. Sad day. All the other counselors were so great also. Love them all.

3. I LOVE MY 10 GIRLS!! I can’t tell you how great, funny, unique, and spiritual they are. My girls were amazing and were an example to me every single day. I miss all ten of them so much.

4. I LOVE OUR GROUP: COURAGE TO RISE! We had a huuuuge group. 38 kids. Holy cow. We all got along so well and had so much fun together. Playing ninja, eating noodles, dancing, escorting, and laughing at the hot dog man, and becoming so close throughout the week. We were a group made for each other.

5. I love the two DANCES. The dances are definitely everyone’s favorite part of the week. They are fun, sweaty, slightly awkward, and hilarious. I love interpretive dancing with co counselors when we are supposed to be productive and modesty patrolling it up.

6. I love GAME AND CHEER NIGHT! (especially cause we won. Yeaaa yuhhhh!!) We had the best cheer, and even though we failed in the games cause our group was so dang big, we still had the best time. Our group had so much enthusiasm and spirit. It was so great.

Photobucket

Photobucket

7. I love PIZZA NIGHT. Pizza night means you eat too much, laugh a lot, and spill soda all over the floor. Pizza night with my 10 girls was so much fun, especially after our cheer night success.

Photobucket

8. I love OUR BOYS. Our boys were so nice. They are going to be great missionaries. I was nothing buy impressed with them and their manners and knowledge of the scriptures all week. Amazing boys. Lizzie needs to marry one or all of them.

9. I love THURSDAY. Thursday is spiritual day, when we get out of our polos and into modest skirts. We have devotionals, hymn singing, testimony bearing, music programs, and amazing experiences. It is a great day. Probably the best. I got to be on a panel with two other guy counselors for the young men at E.F.Y. There were a LOT of boys in that room, and one girl. It was intense but I loved getting to answer their questions and everything. It was really cool.

10. I love TEXAS. I never thought I would say that. But it is true! It is a beautiful and fun place filled with friendly people and great dollar stores and Chinese dining establishments. I loved Texas and cannot wait to get to San Antonio in one week!!!!

So. That is my life at E.F.Y. I love E.F.Y. It was a success. Big time success. Can’t wait for two more weeks of it in San Antonio!!!

KANARA!!

ok this is seriously AWESOME.
if you know my family at all, you know where all the Hayes clan comes from. Kanarraville, Utah. Seriously, that tiny small little town in Southern Utah is populated with my family members. I love it.

I also love Mormon Messages. And this one is SOOO good!

Basically, Elder Holland was helped out by a
member of my distant family from Kanarraville
30 years ago. My dad saw this and has
watched it like 49302 times. And we just
watched it for FHE. It is a great message,
and blog worth cause of the Kanarraville
tie-in. I am going to spend the next weekend
in Kanarville for the 4th of July. I will
think of you Elder Holland, thanks for this
great video.

TAR COVERED Huntington Trip!!

About two weeks ago, my mom, aunt blythe, cousin liza, and i all went to huntington beach and los angeles for a few days. it was wonderful. the welshes come to visit us at the condo every summer, but last year we failed to carry n the tradition. liza said: "worst summer of my life." we had to remedy the situation with this trip. It turned out to be one the greatest ever!

i will now go on a picture overload to document the trip. apologies that there are so many, but when liza and I get together our hilarious-ness combined together provides numerous photo opportunities. soooo that is how the H.B. story will get told to the blog stalking world!

this picture pretty much defines the trip: TAR COVERED. i forced liza to help me carry in some cool seaweed from the ocean, no idea why, and she ended up stepping in some tar. it took lots of nail polish remover, non-toxic cleaning supplies, and blythie elbow grease to clean off the poor girl!

lovely cousins at the beach.

we went to balboa island so we could feel bad about where we live and what our houses look like. that and so i could quote "arrested development" about ten thousand million times. THERE'S ALWAYS MONEY IN THE BANANA STAND.

visiting a public pier (not private pier). they build these for the poor peasants like ourselves so we can watch a meager fish to eat for supper.

we went to laguna beach!!! yaaa more ritzy beaches! this picture was taken after an epic failure by liza and i to attract some visiting british boys. they chose to pay attention to a homeless bum rather than us. fail.

moreeee lagunaaa. we love this place.

liza pondering life over the waters.

a friendly cop took a picture of all of us! we look good....

liza took some pictures of me at the beach! she is SOOOO good! cause i for sure do not normally look this good. she did my hair and make-up too...check out elizawelshphotos.blogspot.com!

we were feeling the election spirit all the way over in california! GO MEG!

fair food at the HB tuesday night street fair!! stop being so "corny" eliza. bah hahah.

blythe and mom's one great fear: the bear of germs! we love to torment them by almost touching it every time we pass it. so hilarious, mom always gags.

we visited the "la brea tar pits" in downtown los angeles after our tar incident at the beach. liza and i love this place! hot tar bubbles up out of the ground! no joke, it is so cool. and they have this sad display of a dying woolly mammoth. wahhh.

our friend manny the mammoth. we tried to touch him numerous times. fail.

skinny model pose! stick your hour chin out and put your hands on your hip and you look instantaneously thin! seriously, try it.

old people of the group next to the sloth. haha sorry, they hate the old people jokes.

liza and i having our picture taken by a random asian man at the L.A. farmer's market! we tried so hard to see a famous person and/or the jonas brothers. nope, didn't happen. next time.

olivera street! we bought catholic saints bracelets cause we are cultured and accepting of everyone and stuff. es bueno!!!

so mexican right now. i love that street.

we met up with the Ngo family and chad at phillipe's sandwhich shop! uncle tom arrived in a limo. bah hahah funniest moment of my life. he is so classy.

eating some yummy sandwhiches with the family. this is candid. if you can't tell.

we bought a sketchy grab bag for a dollar. i was pretty sure there would be sketchy things inside, but nope, there was a fancy plastic harmonica!!

DISNEY HALL! mary ruth had her orchestra concert there. it was so great, she did awesome and there were lots of old almost dead celebritites there which was fun. dick ban dyke did a dance and sang! and the voice of karl from pixar's "up" was there. it made me happy.

ta da!!! she looks so good. she plays the bass and had to stand up for so long. i was impressed.

the whole cheering section! mary ruth was well represented.

wow. well...that was our trip! so much fun. i wish we never had to leave, but i am glad we did beause i went to EFY after this trip and it was such a great experience and the best time of my life. keep your eyes peeled for my next post which will document my EFY week! yayy!!!
